Pilates is a system of body conditioning designed to develop strength and flexibility through the use of over 500 exercises designed by Joseph Pilates, derived from the principles of yoga, Zen, and the ancient Greek and Roman fitness regimens. Pilates called his system "Contrology" because its entire purpose is the development of body control. Individuals practicing this method develop physical control by reinforcing the body's center through precise, concentrated, flowing movements done while breathing slowly and deeply. The method uses apparatus specifically designed by Pilates to center and strengthen the body as a whole.
Pilates exercises are low impact, using the abdominal wall as the source of strength for the entire body, and ideal for injury prevention and rehabilitation. Pilates improves posture, increases circulation and reduces stress by focusing the mind and the body to work together for total fitness. The end result is defined muscle tone without the bulk of traditional weight training programs, along with increased flexibility.
"Not all Pilates is the same."
body central is dedicated to the health of each client, and provides the highest quality of instruction from certified trainers. Our Pilates instructors have been trained by Master Teacher Romana Kryzanowska, the direct successor and protégé of Joseph Pilates, and/or the teacher trainers under her guidance. Each instructor has successfully completed a rigorous 600 hour apprenticeship in which they have learned to modify the exercises to fit any body type, condition, and injury from herniated discs, to a broken foot. body central is proud to be affiliated with “Romana’s Pilates”, the leading certification program throughout the world, and is dedicated to preserving this method of Pilates training to it’s purest form, the way Joseph Pilates intended it.

the methods
The Pilates (created by Joseph Pilates) and GYROTONIC® (created by Juliu Horvath) methods are both systems of body conditioning designed specifically to increase strength while improving range of motion. Their goal is to produce a lean, balanced, and properly aligned physique by engaging both the mind and the body. While extremely complementary to one another, these two methods achieve results using slightly different techniques. Pilates emphasizes movement that begins with the use and stabilization of core muscle groups (abdomen, buttocks and inner thighs). The GYROTONIC® method focuses on the expansion and contraction of muscles through circular movement.
private sessions
Individual sessions offer one on one training in the Pilates or GYROTONIC® method using specialized equipment that was personally designed by either Pilates or Horvath, respectively. These are customized sessions designed specifically for the individual, and are based on personal strengths, weaknesses, injury history and fitness goals. Duet sessions in Pilates also are available.
group classes
Group classes focus on the floor, or mat, component of the methods. Classes are divided into levels, and everyone without prior experience begins at level one. Advancement to the next level is by instructor's approval only. Group classes are an affordable introduction to the method and a wonderful supplement to private sessions. See the Group Class Schedule for more information.
studio policies
Individual and duet sessions are offered by appointment only and require 24 hours notice for cancellation, as well as pre-payment for the first session. Standing appointments are available for members with series. Overdue series will incur a late fee of $15. All mat classes are offered on a first come, first served basis and do not require an appointment. Please refer to the Group Class Schedule for class times. All series are non-refundable and expire one year from the date of purchase.
