frequently asked questions
Pilates & GYROTONIC® Exercise

What makes Pilates different from other exercise regimes?
The Pilates method of exercise works to develop core strength and body flexibility by aligning and strengthening the body from the center out. It promotes concentration, precision and fluidity of movement through cooperation between mind and body.

What makes GYROTONIC® different from other exercise regimes?
The GYROTONIC® system of exercise develops coordination, strength and flexibility, emphasizing circularity of movement, especially through the core and the joints. It encourages you to expand and contract your body in a flowing motion.

What is the body's core?
The "core" consists of the abdominal muscles (especially lower abs), as well as the bottom, inner thighs and lower back muscles. These muscle groups, ideally, lead the body in performance of both daily and athletic physical activities.

Are the Pilates & GYROTONIC® methods complementary? Should I do both or concentrate on just one?
They are extremely complementary to one another as well as with most forms of yoga training since they involve a low-impact body conditioning that integrates rather than isolates body parts. It is completely up to you whether you stick to one method or combine the two in your workout schedule.

Is Pilates/GYROTONIC® a complete workout? Do I need to do anything else for exercise?
Either Pilates or GYROTONIC® is a complete workout, strengthening the body and increasing range of motion. However, we do recommend staying physically active outside of your Pilates and/or GYROTONIC® training if you reasonably can, especially for cardiovascular exercise.

How long will it take for me to see a difference in my body with Pilates and/or GYROTONIC® exercise?
As with any exercise program, results are achieved through a two to three time a week commitment. Bodies change at a different rate, but Pilates & GYROTONIC® exercise should improve your posture within the first ten sessions and lengthen and strengthen your body in the next ten to twenty sessions.

How many times a week should I do Pilates and/or GYROTONIC® exercise?
We recommend at least two to three times a week in any combination of private sessions and mat classes.

Is Pilates/GYROTONIC® safe for someone with lower back problems?
Most lower back problems stem from weak abdominal muscles. Both these methods focus on strengthening the abdominal wall to support the spine. In addition, alignment and range of motion are improved, causing less strain on the back. It is important that you discuss any injuries with your instructor before class so they may better assist you with any necessary precautions or modifications.

Will Pilates and/or GYROTONIC® improve my golf game?
Definitely! With increased range of motion, a stronger center and better posture, your golf swing will improve. Our methods are used by professional athletes worldwide to help improve their sport, whether it is on the basketball court, the football field or the golf course.

Will Pilates/GYROTONIC® help me lose weight?
Both Pilates & GYROTONIC® change the body by adding strength without bulk! They are not weight loss programs, but clients feel that their entire physique alters, often changing their clothing size. You should feel and look better!

body central

What is history of body central?
The studio was founded by Body Central, LLC in 1999 as a "pure" Pilates studio. In early 2004, Centered Fitness Corporation purchased most of Body Central, LLC's assets, and continued to operate body central without interruption, but with a mind toward expanded offerings beyond Pilates. CFC is jointly owned by Lori Schneider and Robin Warden, both instructors at body central.

What forms of exercise are offered at body central?
We offer Pilates, GYROTONIC®, acupressure stretch, yoga and cardiovascular exercise at our studio.

What is the availability and the training of the studio's instructors?
We have more than 10 instructors available, each with expertise in at least one Ð Pilates, yoga, acupressure or GYROTONIC® -- method of exercise. All of our associate instructors have received advanced teacher training in their method of expertise, and each receives continuing professional education on a periodic basis.

What should I wear for my workout?
Comfortable workout wear that allows the body to move without restriction. Footwear consists of socks, no shoes.

Should I begin with private sessions or small group mat classes?
Ideally, a private session is best because you are working one on one with a trained instructor who can cater the session to your particular needs. Small Pilates mat classes are taught in a group environment, require no appointment and are a great workout. In Pilates, we recommend a combination of both mat classes and private sessions to achieve optimum results. The GYROTONIC® method is only taught in private sessions, consistent with the intentions of its inventor, Juliu Horvath.

What should I expect to feel after my first workout at body central?
Each body responds differently. You may feel as though your first session was a difficult workout, or you may feel as though it was not hard enough. Some people are sore the next day, even though they may not have felt much during the first class. The Pilates method is based on centering and control, not repetitions and heavy weights. Form is essential. The first few classes focus on the basic principles, establishing a mind and body connection. As you progress, the work intensifies and the sessions become more strenuous, challenging even the professional athlete.

What are the studio's hours of operation?
We are open six days a week, Monday-Saturday. Private and duet Pilates sessions are available Monday-Friday, 6 AM-8 PM, and Saturday, 8 AM-2 PM. Private GYROTONIC® sessions are available Thursdays, 7 AM-11 AM and 2 PM-6 PM, and by special appointment on other days of the week. Small group Pilates and yoga classes are offered multiple times per week, according to the class schedule.

What is body central's cancellation policy?
We have a 24-hour cancellation policy for private and duet sessions. If you cancel your session prior to 24 hours in advance of your workout, there is no charge. Otherwise, we charge for the full session. Since our group Pilates classes are offered on a walk-in basis with no appoint, no cancellation is necessary.
